7,5 million people in Germany can not read and write properly and more than a half of them are
employed. Many of these people work in in the retail industry, the health industry, social
services, transport and warehousing, manufacturing industries and catering and building
BasisKom is a collaborative research project of ARBEIT UND LEBEN and begins at the point of
workplace oriented basic education. The Betriebs- und BasisKompetenzCheck helps companies
to find out concrete deficits and to train their employees on a location-specific basis.
For this we created an Online-Tool that allows companies to create a questionnaire for their
employees. The employees can then answer the questions anonymously and point out for the
company in which areas they should support basic educational needs. This is the project's point
of departure and it ofers education programs close to the workplace, to support their
employees to facilitate their everyday working life.
